My iPhone 5 Experience pt1

I have upgraded my iPhone to the latest iPhone 5 – Diana is going to have my iPhone 4.

I ordered the phone from Apple.com. Last week a friend of mine went to the Apple shop in Meadowhall and queued for an hour and a half to buy his iPhone – it was much quicker on the website.

What did I buy?

A 32GB Black/slate iPhone 5 – I would have bought the 64GB model but the £100 more it costs was just too much extra to spend.

Lightning to 30 pin adapter – Apple has changed it’s long serving iPod/iPad/iPhone connector, having this adaptor means I can continue using some of my accessories.

Screen protector – I have had an Apple, matt finish, screen protector on my iPhone 4, I am sure it has stopped me damaging the screen and the non-reflective finish makes the display easier to read – so I got one for this phone.

AppleCare Protection Plan – several people I know have had to use their AppleCare packs with their devices and have had good experiences. The speaker on my iPhone 4 has a fault which would have been covered if I’d had AppleCare – so for £61 I thought that was good value insurance for the new phone.

Prompt delivery

I placed my order at about 3pm and the phone and connector was delivered before 9am the next morning. The care pack and screen protector came a day later. Very good service.

Opening the box

This was a problem – when I opened the box it slid apart very slowly,as it is a tight fit, then suddenly gave way and the new phone dropped out! Luckily I opened the box sitting at my desk, rather than standing over the stone floor, so no damage was done. So take care if you buy one.

I could do little with the phone at that point as I did not have a SIM card – so today I am off to the EE shop to get my card changed to one that fits.

First impressions

It is noticeably lighter and thinner than the 4. I like the slim, “one thumb typing” design as I regularly use my phone one handed. One of our engineers has a Samsung S3, it has an impressive large screen but it is awkward to use one handed.

I will have more to say once I can use the phone.
