It has been a busy week at Octagon – Who looks after your domain?

It has been a busy week at Octagon. We have been helping the usual variety of clients with their tech problems and Martin got back from his holiday and hit the ground running.

this is not where the new Octagon Technology office is but a view from Martin’s holiday

Who looks after your domain?

Two jobs, we have been working on for a couple of weeks came to a successful conclusion this week. Both involved clients loosing control of their domain names. I will not go into details, but what you should do reading this, is to check that you know exactly who is in control of one of the most valuable assets of your business. I know exactly who has that power in Octagon, Diana and myself.

When a trusted colleague, who hosted the Octagon domains and a number of our client’s domains (because we had recommended him to them), closed his website business we bought the hosting element of the business so we kept control of the domains. Since then we have been trusted by other clients to look after their domains. We do not build their web sites, others do that, but we do help with email set ups and provide support for that and advise on how to structure the domain so our clients always know what is going on.

So check today.

  • Who hosts your domain?
  • Do you have a relationship with that company – if so that is good, if not do you still want them hosting your domain?
  • Does a member of your staff have sole control of your domain – if so then may be you should check that your email address is used for administration changes such as resetting the master password.

Business Networking

I have been to two Business Networking Events this week. On Monday Jeremy and I went to The Business Club Lincoln to the very busy Matrix evening. If you want an intense, focused opportunity to  get people excited about your business then this is the event and networking group for you.

James from Peninsula Business Services presenting at The Business Club Lincoln

On Thursday I went to the very different group, The Business Network Lincoln. Here I met with a smaller group of businesses over lunch, having spent the previous couple of hours in an excellent seminar about how profiling can help you with your staff.

Whilst at the meeting I got my “photo of the day” and Tweeted it for Octagon – see here.

I can really recommend both of these groups as places where you can do business.

Today

Martin is already out on site, helping another company put their system into one of our client’s sites and then making sure all the various networks can talk to each other. When I finish this blog, I am off to help a client buy a new laptop, which will probably include a stop off in Costa Coffee!

Later Martin and I will both be going to look at a computer that is infected with a very nasty Trojan that is stopping it using any web browser.

Other jobs include, looking at a hard drive on a Windows 8 laptop that appears to be completely blank, updating several clients on the status of their projects and getting onto Skype with a client in London to start the planning for installing a new Windows server on their site.

Have a great weekend, as it looks like it is going to be good weather this weekend I am going camping to make up for my May Day weekend backpacking trip to the Lake District.
