Busy business people put data at risk. Don’t let the worst happen to you and implement these simple security tips right now

Technology development allow us to work from anywhere and anytime. You work early in the morning, whilst traveling on that train to work and checking your email on a smartphone or late at night after completing that budget presentation on your laptop at home for a staff meeting the following day.

Busy business people put data at risk. Are you one of them? Did you ever leave your mobile device on the back of a taxi, in a hotel room or on a train? You may be thinking, ‘yes, I did and it was one of the most stressful moments of my life’ or ‘no, and it will never happen to me, I always keep an eye on my device.’ Unfortunately, these situations happen and forgetfulness or a thief can deprive us of our mobile devices where all our important data such as contacts, photos, and business documents are saved.

Here are some security tips you should implement immediately to stay safer:

  • Everything starts with a strong password

The first step in securing your laptop, phone, or other mobile device is to put a strong password on it.

It’s sad that the items we hate to lose are the ones that we lose most often. The most frequently you carry it, the more likely you are to lose it.  Clive Catton, Technical Director at Octagon Technology said that ‘the loss of even a small amount of information brings not only financial loss, but also causes significant damage to a business’s image, having an impact on maintaining and attracting new customers.’

  • Take benefit of mobile geolocation services such as the GPS system or WiFi network

One of the first things you should do when you purchase a new phone is to configure it properly.

Finding a lost smartphone can happen in at least two different ways, assuming of course that your phone is switched on and at least either of two the GPS or WiFi network is active.

  • Detect your smartphone by the GPS system – the position defined by the GPS system is the most accurate. However, it is necessary for your smartphone to be in an area for the GPS antenna to have good signal.
  • Geographical location of the access points in Wi-Fi connections – To find the location of a phone connected to a Wi-Fi network, just find the MAC address of the access point and check the database to see its geographical address.

  • Be prepared and be smart

Nobody wants to lose their smartphone, but if this happens with our simple security tips your data is safer and with modern geolocation technologies there is a hope of finding your device again. Remember data backup needs to be an integrated part of your business. The best backup systems are automated, managed and monitored, and are fast to recover if the worst happens.  You should properly configure your device and backup your data right away, or once you have finished reading this article.
