World Backup Day

Repeat after me: “I solemnly swear to backup my important documents and precious memories on March 31st”.  That is the World Backup Day pledge, but don’t just do it on March 31st – do it every day!

Here at Octagon Technology the most consistent message we give out at networking meetings and here on our blog is to backup your data.  However, most people find that despite good intentions, they never find the time if they have to do it themselves.

Why is backing up your data so important anyway?  Surely all the stuff remains on your computer hard drive for ever, doesn’t it?

Well, let’s just get a bit more realistic here.  Firstly, there is a 100 per cent likelihood that eventually all your computer equipment will fail.  Secondly, keeping your backup on removable media kept in the same place as your computer will not protect your data if there is a fire, a flood, a burglary…

Another widely held belief is that if you use Cloud-based software such as Microsoft 365, all your documents are kept safe by Microsoft so you don’t need to worry about doing your own backup.  Sorry to disillusion you, but the data kept by Microsoft is only kept for a very limited amount of time and is difficult to retrieve, so don’t rely on that.

So, if the worst that could happen is a fire, flood or burglary, you just keep your backup somewhere else, right?  OK, that idea was a good one in its time, probably about the time World Backup Day was initiated in 2011, but since then the world has become a very different place and the risks to data are not just the physical ones such as acts of God.  Malware, ransomware, bad actors hacking into your computer, staff mistakes or intentional malicious acts, people working on company data from all sorts of locations with maybe the risk of unauthorised users such as children importing computer viruses that wipe your data – the list of threats to your data grows larger all the time!

So the importance of a good backup has grown hugely since 2011 and is also a basic requirement if you look after other people’s data.  If the worst came to the worst and you lost all your data, would your business survive?  We have lost count of the number of businesses we have heard of that had to close after a data loss disaster.  There’s your reputation too – who would deal with you again if they found out that you had not looked after your company information?

Backup these days is not as time-consuming as it was ten years ago.  You don’t need a pile of floppy disks and a ton of time.  All you need is us!  We provide an amazing backup service and it costs less than you think!  All the data you want to back up is stored safely for you on UK-based servers and we have a member of staff who checks every day that the backup has actually taken place.  Not only that, we regularly check that you can also restore the data, something many businesses find they cannot do only after disaster strikes.  The best kind of backup has what we call retention, that is, we keep a number of the daily backups of your data, so that if there is a problem with restoring one, we just go back to the day before.  This minimises the amount of work you could lose if disaster strikes.  Not only that, we can restore your data very quickly so that business downtime is kept to a minimum too.

All you have to do is give us your money and we do everything for you!  Call Kamila now on 01522 797520 for more details or complete the contact form on our website https://www.octagontech.com
