Keep it secret, keep it safe!

Encryption is a huge part of the modern world, it exists in almost every corner of computing and many of the processes we rely on daily simply would not function without it. Put simply, it is a way of rendering information to be incomprehensible to all but the desired recipient(s). Data exists on a fundamental level as a series of ones and zeros 01100110 and encrypted data is no different, all that changes is the rules for interpreting it, tantamount to inventing your own language. Encryption mixes up your data in an elaborate and complicated but ultimately reversable way in order to obfuscate it and unless you know the rules for the mixing it is largely impossible to “un-mix”.

Most of us know the importance of a strong password, multi-factor authentication and so on, but all too often the endpoint (the computer) is the weakest part of the security. Not every location on your computer’s drive is safe, and remnants of data can persist and can potentially be accessed by a determined individual.

This is why I would like to briefly talk about FDE or Full Disk Encryption.

Technology has been moving in this direction for some time, many phones already do this, and it has been available on MacOS, Linux and Windows for many years. However, unless specifically required many businesses and individuals do not enable it, leaving potentially sensitive data on drives for anyone to discover.

Microsoft windows 11 now requires a TPM or Trusted Platform Module for installation, which many PCs have. It’s a chip that keeps the specific encryption keys safe and will be used for many security features.

 Windows and Mac users can enable full encryption easily and if you want to make sure your data is yours, why not enable it today?
