Amps, Volts and IT Support

IT Support is more than just looking after your computers. Sometimes people have problems with their routers, or have to relocate and plug their router in at a different building or location.

You need to make sure that the power adapter you use is the correct one for the device as they can easily be mixed up with other power adapters. The plugs on the end may look the same and even fit in the devices but if you get the wrong one you risk excessive heat which could lead to a fire in the worst circumstances.

We were called recently as a WiFi Access Point had stopped working. It turned out to be the power adapter and the warranty only supported the whole unit not just the power supply adapter. I had a look around to see what was happening and came across this:

The Volts may be correct but if it isn’t the same Amperage then the unit isn’t suitable.

Issues that can result from incorrect equipment

The issues that can result are numerous. They can range from the unit not switching on, the unit overheating, to the device not behaving correctly. For example, one minute you are online the next you are not!

What to do about it?

See your manual or have a look at the back of the device. Sometimes devices are stamped with the correct Amperage and Volts so you can see if you can source online through your phone if you cannot get online. Certain auction sites are good for this , but be careful as a few makes out there don’t quite meet the quality standard. If you can buy original equipment, then spend the extra money as you don’t want to cause a fire risk. The same goes for any adapters, e.g., laptop chargers and the like.
