Don’t bury your head in the sand! If you have anti-virus, a firewall on your router, and keep your passwords secret, you probably think you have cyber security covered, but I have bad news for you – you haven’t.
Cyber Security as an Investment
If you have bought anti-virus software you have invested in cyber security. But are you aware that traditional anti-virus is not enough in these days of cloud systems, such as Microsoft 365, Google WorkSpace, online banking and accounting, etc.?
Before you worry about the anti-virus, you need to worry about the regular patches and updates that must be applied to your equipment and software to keep them cyber secure in this world of sophisticated and automated cyber attacks. Do you know if your people are doing those updates?
Passwords
We talk about passwords but what we mean is credentials. Those credentials could give someone access to your organisation’s assets. This could be the PIN to get in through the front door or to access confidential information held in your SharePoint. People have CCTV and even real guards to watch the doors to their offices – and most of these security precautions are there for when your people go home as that is when thieves are likely to strike. But do you have someone watching your information night and day?

I could keep adding examples but was told to keep this article simple and non-technical. My task is to show you that cyber security impacts every organisation, big or small. Big companies that suffer a cyber security incident make the news, smaller ones suffer in silence.
