A patch in time!

A client recently brought their laptop to us as they were unable to get remote support. They had very likely been the victim of a scam which had cost them a significant sum of money. They wanted us to check their computer for malware and see the offending emails. This proved tricky as none of the remote software would run and it was not initially clear as to why. Quick assist would not start, and so we tried to run the Microsoft store, which also would not start along with many other important parts of Windows 10. We checked to see which build version of windows was on the machine and found it was running an extremely old version 1709 and had not had important updates for a very long time. After several hours of downloading, patching and restarting, everything was back to running normally. That particular version had support stopped in October 2020, the client should have ideally been on 22H2 version which is the latest at the time of writing.

This goes to show how ignoring updates will eventually lead to unpredictable problems, software issues and loss of function. These problems can be avoided and usually (though not always) everything will run smoother and more consistently, leaving you with more time to deal with scammers and phishing and maybe even some actual work.
