20 years of Xbox – the Live Stream 18:00 GMT

If you are a big fan of Xbox – (something that passed me by, but did interest my children), you will want to catch the Live Stream this evening of the twentieth anniversary celebration of all things Xbox.

Yes, you read that right. It is twenty years since Xbox burst into our lives and suddenly teenagers didn’t hole themselves up in their rooms to play music – they played games instead.

There is an argument out there about whether the games were better for teenagers’ cognitive development than the music. In many cases the music inspired them to have a go themselves, which is what happened to me. I remember plucking a few guitar chords and wailing along to popular songs, accompanied by my tone-deaf cat – now there’s an image for you!

The games encouraged problem-solving, hand-eye coordination and often working with others online to beat a common enemy. In my view there are too many games out there celebrating people killing each other, but there are also strategy games and real-life simulation games.

So if you want to go down memory lane with Xbox this evening it all takes place at 18:00 GMT and you can watch on the official Xbox channels on https://www.youtube.com/user/xbox/hub, https://www.twitch.tv/xbox or https://www.facebook.com/xbox/.

I’m told there will be some content about what the future holds too.
